Quote of the Day:

"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2     He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3     he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
    for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
    through the valley of the shadow of death,[a]
I will fear no evil,
    for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me."

Psalm 23:1-4

The Highwayman, By: Alfred Noyes

Some of you will remember this from the Anne of Green Gables mini-series starring Megan Follows, and some of you may already have an appreciation for this poem....with its beautiful language, style, and suspense!! Enjoy...

PART ONE

I

THE wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees,
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding—
Riding—riding—
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.

II

He'd a French cocked-hat on his forehead, a bunch of lace at his chin,
A coat of the claret velvet, and breeches of brown doe-skin;
They fitted with never a wrinkle: his boots were up to the thigh!
And he rode with a jewelled twinkle,
His pistol butts a-twinkle,
His rapier hilt a-twinkle, under the jewelled sky.

III

Over the cobbles he clattered and clashed in the dark inn-yard,
And he tapped with his whip on the shutters, but all was locked and barred;
He whistled a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there
But the landlord's black-eyed daughter,
Bess, the landlord's daughter,
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair.

IV

And dark in the dark old inn-yard a stable-wicket creaked
Where Tim the ostler listened; his face was white and peaked;
His eyes were hollows of madness, his hair like mouldy hay,
But he loved the landlord's daughter,
The landlord's red-lipped daughter,
Dumb as a dog he listened, and he heard the robber say—

V

'One kiss, my bonny sweetheart, I'm after a prize to-night,
But I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light;
Yet, if they press me sharply, and harry me through the day,
Then look for me by moonlight,
Watch for me by moonlight,
I'll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way.'

VI

He rose upright in the stirrups; he scarce could reach her hand,
But she loosened her hair i' the casement! His face burnt like a brand
As the black cascade of perfume came tumbling over his breast;
And he kissed its waves in the moonlight,
(Oh, sweet, black waves in the moonlight!)
Then he tugged at his rein in the moonliglt, and galloped away to the West.

PART TWO

I

He did not come in the dawning; he did not come at noon;
And out o' the tawny sunset, before the rise o' the moon,
When the road was a gypsy's ribbon, looping the purple moor,
A red-coat troop came marching—
Marching—marching—
King George's men came matching, up to the old inn-door.

II

They said no word to the landlord, they drank his ale instead,
But they gagged his daughter and bound her to the foot of her narrow bed;
Two of them knelt at her casement, with muskets at their side!
There was death at every window;
And hell at one dark window;
For Bess could see, through her casement, the road that he would ride.

III

They had tied her up to attention, with many a sniggering jest;
They had bound a musket beside her, with the barrel beneath her breast!
'Now, keep good watch!' and they kissed her.
She heard the dead man say—
Look for me by moonlight;
Watch for me by moonlight;
I'll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way!

IV

She twisted her hands behind her; but all the knots held good!
She writhed her hands till her fingers were wet with sweat or blood!
They stretched and strained in the darkness, and the hours crawled by like years,
Till, now, on the stroke of midnight,
Cold, on the stroke of midnight,
The tip of one finger touched it! The trigger at least was hers!

V

The tip of one finger touched it; she strove no more for the rest!
Up, she stood up to attention, with the barrel beneath her breast,
She would not risk their hearing; she would not strive again;
For the road lay bare in the moonlight;
Blank and bare in the moonlight;
And the blood of her veins in the moonlight throbbed to her love's refrain .

VI

Tlot-tlot; tlot-tlot! Had they heard it? The horse-hoofs ringing clear;
Tlot-tlot, tlot-tlot, in the distance? Were they deaf that they did not hear?
Down the ribbon of moonlight, over the brow of the hill,
The highwayman came riding,
Riding, riding!
The red-coats looked to their priming! She stood up, straight and still!

VII

Tlot-tlot, in the frosty silence! Tlot-tlot, in the echoing night!
Nearer he came and nearer! Her face was like a light!
Her eyes grew wide for a moment; she drew one last deep breath,
Then her finger moved in the moonlight,
Her musket shattered the moonlight,
Shattered her breast in the moonlight and warned him—with her death.

VIII

He turned; he spurred to the West; he did not know who stood
Bowed, with her head o'er the musket, drenched with her own red blood!
Not till the dawn he heard it, his face grew grey to hear
How Bess, the landlord's daughter,
The landlord's black-eyed daughter,
Had watched for her love in the moonlight, and died in the darkness there.

IX

Back, he spurred like a madman, shrieking a curse to the sky,
With the white road smoking behind him and his rapier brandished high!
Blood-red were his spurs i' the golden noon; wine-red was his velvet coat,
When they shot him down on the highway,
Down like a dog on the highway,
And he lay in his blood on the highway, with the bunch of lace at his throat.

X

And still of a winter's night, they say, when the wind is in the trees,
When the moon is a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
When the road is a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
A highwayman comes riding—
Riding—riding—
A highwayman comes riding, up to the old inn-door.

XI

Over the cobbles he clatters and clangs in the dark inn-yard;
He taps with his whip on the shutters, but all is locked and barred;
He whistles a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there
But the landlord's black-eyed daughter,
Bess, the landlord's daughter,
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair.

Equine Diaries

Gideon has been learning to jump more, and more! We are still just taking simple, low x's, but he has become less afraid of coming to the jumps, getting better at lifting his front legs up, bending and holding his knees up higher, and using more jump force--instead of only hopping or stepping over the jumps. I feel proud that he is listening to me and becoming more and more of a close partner :)

A New Favorite Recipe!!

I have recently become dairy, sugar, and iodized salt, free. But, while on a diet like this, it can be hard to adjust...and NOT giving in to that chocolate craving!!! ; )

So, to help to hone in on these dying-for-sugar moments, my mom found a really good, healthy, and simple recipe for a delish dessert!

Almond Butter Chip Bars
**(or Chocolate Almond Chip Brownies....in desired)

1-16 oz. organic creamy almond butter (not "Not Stir")

1 cup Blue Agave Nectar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. sea salt
1 cup organic carob chips or organic dark chocolate chips

Mix almond butter with a hand blender until creamy. Add blue agave, eggs, vanilla, baking soda, and sea salt. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined. Mix half of the carob chips or dark chocolate chips into the batter. Pour batter into a well greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Top with the rest of the carob or chocolate chips. Bake at 325 degrees for 25 to 35 minutes. Once out of the oven, it will look like a puffed up souffle'. Let it sit for five minutes before cutting and serving. Substitute other organic nut butters for unique flavors.

**To make the recipe into more of a brownie-like taste, use chocolate almond butter. (But if you cannot find chocolate almond butter at your local grocery store, than you can add organic cocoa and additional agave nectar to the almond butter, before combining with the rest of the ingredients.) We used about 1/2 cup of organic cocoa, and about 1/4-1/2 cup (or to desired sweetness) of the blue agave nectar.

These are yummy!!!!!

The Importance of Horse First Aid

For a project this year...I have been working on learning more in depth about horse first aid. There is a lot more to it than one might expect...
While horses are big, strong, defensive, thousand-pound animals...they can also get themselves into a lot of "scrapes." Being such large animals has its high points, but because horses are flight animals they have the natural instincts of prey animals, which naturally leads to fleeing. Now, when horses flee they don't exactly, always give themselves time to think about what they're doing...in turn leading to unexpected "scrapes"-running into something, stepping somewhere they shouldn't, the possibilities are endless...! So, as horses don't usually plan on getting themselves hurt....we, as humans, their owners, and partners(the head of the "herd") have to be prepared for whatever situations our beloved horses will get themselves into. Thus, to know first aid is vital as a horse owner...trainer...or even just plain lover!
First, and foremost, in emergency care for horses it is important to know how know if a horse is normal.
1 Ask yourself how your horse looks....get into the habit of describing the way your horse looks on a normal day...
- Is my horse alert?
- Does he look limp or glazed-over?
- How is his appetite?
- Are his eyes open, normal, and forward?
- Does my horse react to circumstances as usual?

Equine Diaries

I am officially leasing a horse now! Yay!
It's a really neat feeling....when your trainer tells you, "treat him like he's your own horse" it makes you feel all proud inside and excited to get started and do as much as you can, as soon as you can-to get busy working with "my" horse.
Giddy-that's his name-is a real sweety. He's adorable, and has the cutest, nicest build to him. He is half Arab, half Quarter Horse and a beautiful red/chestnut coloring. I love his dainty, white face markings best! :)
Now that we have been doing lessons for a while and have a few shows chosen to shoot for this summer show season, I am ready and "rearing to go" and get to work with training Giddy (and him training me...) so we can meet our best potential!

An Amazing and Inspirational Vistory Run...

I recently recieved this video from a family member, who knows I am a horse-lover. When I got it I couldn't wait to share it with all of my readers. It is simply awesome. Just watch it and you'll see what good training, good horsemanship, and a lot of determination, patience, and perseverence can give you when you use all three to your best ability and can turn them into something beautiful.

An inspiration to all of us who yearn to be someone in, or simply thrive in the horse world some day.

Equestrian Diaries

Dear fellow riders and hippophiles*,
Last time in equestrian diaries I was writing to you about how I was beginning dressage and what I was learning so far.
Well, as my trainer recently said, "Dressage isn't like other disciplines of riding, it's a journey," I found this to be true...even with such little experience with dressage I can see that it takes dedication and a LOT of patience. It really is a journey. When you decide this is the thing for you, that you can't possibly give up so easily, or that you've simply fallen in love with it...you have taken that first baby step into this journey. I've taken that baby step.

I just love it when God puts those perfect situations right in front of you when you are least expecting it! Recently, this happened when I got an opportunity to ride a horse-who is trained in dressage and other riding disciplines-from a very generous lady I met. I am so excited to start working with him! I will let you know soon about how things go through as soon as I start up with him...!
